Had Belle been more than a highschooler with no clue what she wanted with her life, she would have done better. For another, Hermione and Ron had an entirely different relationship and Hermione had dealt with his hot/cold behavior for seven years.

Bella had a normal life and it was only when the whole warewolve drama started happening that she got abit better. Hermione did get abit depressed and even harry trying to dance with her didn't help. The thing that kept her going was the task before them and the fact ron didn't really leave her.
