It was a rusted piece of crap trap! Mechanism must be clean and smooth , maybe even lubricated with peanut oil , for proper operation,
Im not a rat trap maker but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.
i use peanut butter in the rolled over metal part then poor peanut butter oil on metal and wood . they nibble the metal or wood and wham. got a great vid of one cleaning off all the peanut butter with its tongue. thats why use the oil to scent the whole wood under the trigger.
I use live traps instead... not cause I don't want to kill the animals... but so I can find more creative was of killing them later... such as drowning is my fave for squirrels. Basically, you put them under water for about 20 seconds... pull them out, they will choke up some water, sounds like a squeaky toy with water in it... then repeat the steps. Bate them with peanut butter. At least they get a good last meal :)
Poor lil guy.. just wants something to eat. Why kill such a nice looking fellow. How about a mouse trap that just caches it instead of kills it. Although it didnt! Whahaha!
