Giant Squid Taped and will be the subject of a New Discovery Series says ABC. Using lights invisible to squid, bioluminescent lures, and "secret squid attractants," researchers have finally grasped the Holy Grail of deep-sea film making: video of the elusive giant squid. The giant squid was finally recorded on film off the coast of the remote Ogasawara Island, located about 600 miles south of Japan. The giant squid, with razor-toothed suckers and eyes the size of dinner plates, has been the subject of mythology since ancient times. The Norse legend of the sea monster the Kraken, and the Greek myth of the Scylla may have derived from the giant squid. The footage will air as part the Discovery Channel's show Monster Squid: The Giant Is Real, which premieres January 27 at 8 p.m. ET/PT. You can see the very cool sneak preview here. The Discovery Channel combined forces with the Japanese channel NHK for the production. The Kraken is also the subject of an internet meme, "Release the Kraken," derived from a particularly memorable line boomed by Liam Neeson as Zeus in Clash of the Titans. Most of the versions of this meme involve releasing adorable animals instead of a giant squid. Here are ten of my favorites!
