Whack-A-Word by Reading Horizons, a company that has been teaching children to read since 1984 through a unique phonetics system. Whack-A-Word allows students to practice the skills taught in the Reading Horizons software system. Children start in a garden and are challenged to spell a word. And to spell it, they must whack moles that pop up with the correct letter. The game has over 300 words that are spread out across three different levels -- easy, medium, and hard and reinforces Reading Horizons simplified but award-winning version of phonetic rules that are different from the traditional industry standard. I got a chance to play the game and can see how a child would enjoy playing it -- it's great fun and very straightforward. Now Whack-A-Word is available for your iPad and is normally 99 cents, but it's currently free on iTunes for a limited time. So to learn more about the game or the Reading Horizons software for spelling, reading, and pronunciation, head to www.readinghorizons.com/apps.
