'The originals' were not controlled by an iphone. The iphone controlled quadcopter was a toy made by a company a few years back. People have been making quadcopters themselves longer than that. It's quite possible the first quadcopter you ever saw was an iphone based toy though.
Not enough of an atmosphere for anything resembling a 'normal' propeller to work though. I think a study was done on possibly using rocket powered high velocity gliders to fly around the martian atmosphere but they'd need pretty big wings to stand a chance of staying aloft.
Hey PaPPa-D, still think it's fake? You won't think so after you go here... TRUST ME!

Only 178 vids showing various setups. I don't think anyone has the time to fake it that many times....GEEZ
I got to see the original models at a convention earlier this year. Base models don't have that range or speed, but I'm sure with some hobby tweeking and new parts it can easily to stuff like this video. The originals were able to be controlled by an iphone, and also included a mini camera in them as well as sensors. They came with a shooter game where u and a friend could chase eachother and try to virtually shoot the other one down. If you hit a sensor on the opposing machine, it would disable it. Pretty cool stuff.
