Restaurant Fire Shuts Down Sydney CBD

MORE than 1200 city office workers and lunch time diners were evacuated after a fire broke out in a restaurant kitchen. The fire broke out in the exhaust system of Macchiato Pizza Bar and Grill on the corner of Pitt St and Liverpool St in the CBD about 12.30pm. About 50 Fire and Rescue units responded to the blaze that was extinguished less than 30 minutes later. There were reports of injuries with staff and patrons safely self-evacuating, road closures around the area caused traffic chaos. "It looks like it happened in the flue," the restaurant's owner said "I'm not happy." Thick plumes of black smoke filled the intersection before firefighters climbed on to the first floor awning and doused the fire through an exhaust vent. Workers and residents on the 14th floor and above remain inside the building following directions from Fire and Rescue NSW. Fire and Rescue NSW Supt Ian Krimmer said no one was in danger and people could be evacuated if necessary. "There is no risk whatsoever," Supt Krimmer said. With the thick smoke and the number of people evacuating the building, firies faced challenging conditions, Fire and Rescue NSW duty commander Scott Rainnie said. "There was a lot of confusion, a lot of people running around on the street (and) there was a lot of smoke," Mr Rainnie said. The building's automatic sprinkler system contained the blaze to the first floor, he said.
